Words from our clients

April 2006
Name removed to protect confidentiality

It has never been easy for me to stand with hat in hand before anyone. I was raised to believe that I alone am responsible for myself and my family, and if I am unable to meet my responsibilities, I alone am to blame. So it was only as a last resort that I went to AIDS Resource for help.

I have not regretted that move. There I found both the financial and emotional support necessary to help me navigate the terrain that is the area’s social services network. I found, not a hand out, but the proverbial hand up, a helping hand that allows me to do what I am able to do and helps me to do what I otherwise can not. I found help for my family and me with finding medical care, obtaining “affordable” medication, and keeping the medical insurance without which I would surely go under. And I found a way of looking beyond myself and my fears to all that is best in a real community. I do not exaggerate when I say that you and the assistance AIDS Resource has provided have kept me from losing my home and my health, indeed have kept me from losing, at times, my mind.

And I know that it is not just me or others living with HIV and AIDS that you help. I have seen your staff in the most likely and unlikely of places across the region, working tirelessly to educate the public about the disease and its prevention. I have heard your words of encouragement to those in the community coping with HIV and AIDS and your request for assistance from those in the community hoping to prevent and hopefully eradicate HIV and AIDS. I have seen you reach out to young and old, man and woman, black and white, straight and gay, all in an attempt to help each of us feel at home in this human community. And because of that, I have seen in you and your staff the Christian spirit I hear so much about yet see so infrequently.

I do not take much for granted anymore. I know that, despite what is reported about the economy, my paycheck continues to shrink. I know that my ability to provide for myself and my family is threatened every day. I know that the help you offer can only go so far and can only last so long, that the state has already slashed much of your funding. And I know that, despite the President’s call for the reauthorization of the Ryan White Act, reauthorization will likely mean the cutting of services and the perpetuation of a political agenda that will punish – even while it claims to help – those trying to live productive lives in the face of this physically and socially destructive disease.

I fear what would happen to my family and countless others were the services and assistance you provide to disappear, and, while I can, I thank God for your presence. You are not only the help that keeps me going, you are the hope that keeps me going. Because of you and your staff, I know that even with hat in hand, I can hold my head high – at least for today. And by holding my head high, I am able for a while to see a future before me. I thank you more than you know.
